On Saturday October 12, 2019 the Durham Business & Professional Chain (The Chain) will celebrate “Durham Black Business Success” in a day-long tribute to nine Black entrepreneurs and businesses formed from 1887 to 1950 who are still operating in the Durham community. The honorees will share stories that are rich in the history of an overcoming people who placed Durham on the map as a place of excellence for the world to behold.
The honorees are Burthey Funeral Services, Durham Business & Professional Chain, Ellis D. Jones & Sons Funeral Home, Mechanics & Farmers Bank, Mrs. Mozella McLaughlin, North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Scarborough & Hargett Celebration of Life Center, Speight’s Auto Service Center and The Carolina Times.
The Chain’s “Durham Black Business Success” is also a featured event site for the year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of Durham’s founding, making this celebration all the more meaningful in the context of our city’s history. It is the story of achievement against the odds told in our own words.
